Can anyone explain how to solve this math problem?
I’m taking my entrance exam tomorrow into nursing school and currently doing a prep review. I got everything down except I keep getting questions like this …
If Sally can paint a house in 4 hours, and John can paint the same house in 6 hour, how long will it take for both of them to paint the house together? The answer is 2 hours and 24 minutes
but, I have no idea how I would work this problem out.. seems easy but its confusing me badly!
If Sally paints the house in 4 hours, that means in 1 hour, she paints 1/4th of the house. Similarly, John paints 1/6th of the house in 1 hour.
Together they can paint, 1/4 + 1/6 th of the house in 1 hour, ie
3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12th of the house. Which means together, they’ll paint the house in 12/5 hours or 2.4 hours = 2 hr and 24 min (24 min = 24/60 hrs = 0.4 hrs)
Generally, all of such problems are approached by finding the work done in 1 hour.
